Free Book - To Create (K/N)

To Create: Black Writers, Filmmakers, Storytellers, Artists, and Media-Makers Riff on Art, Careers, Life, and the Beautiful Mess in Between, by Felicia Pride, is free in the Kindle store and from Barnes & Noble, courtesy of publisher Agate Digital.
Book Description
To Create is a collection of illuminating interviews with an eclectic set of black artists—including Harry Belafonte, Method Man, Nikki Giovanni, Edwidge Danticat, Edward P. Jones, Booker T. Mattison, and more—as conducted by the writer, entrepreneur, educator, and consultant Felicia Pride. This is an honest, inspiring series of conversations in which Pride and her fellow artists talk openly about the challenges and rewards of working creatively across a multitude of platforms.

Over the course of dozens of frank discussions with writers, activists, and media creators, Pride elicits sincere firsthand perspectives on the struggle to find—or to create, if it's not there—a niche for one's voice in the media landscape. The personable and fluid interview style allows the artists to follow their threads of dialogue to unique, intimate revelations.

The interviews transition smoothly between similar themes, touching on the do-it-yourself mentality of creating; practical musings on media careers; as well as theoretical discussions on art, legacy, and community. Additionally, many of the artists, musicians, and authors discuss finding career longevity through a multi-platform approach, the connection between the personal and political in art, and the ongoing conflict between art and commerce. This is one of the most candid and diversified interview collections within the African-American community, but it is also a stirring look into what it means to be a creator.

Free Book - How I Made Over $42,000 in 1 Month... (K)

How I Made Over $42,000 in 1 Month Selling My Kindle eBooks (Main/UK), by Cheryl Kaye Tardif, is free in the Kindle store, courtesy of publisher Imajin Books.

Note to aspiring authors: it helps quite a bit to first have a successful, traditionally published career, as you'll then have a long backlist of titles, hopefully with the ebook rights retained or reverted, to start with. Otherwise, I'd quit this blog and just start writing books to stick into KDP! Lacking that career path, a great deal of writing talent and a number of well-written, well-edited (not just by a relative or book mill or Microsoft Word) books to market would be a good starting point.
Book Description
UPDATE: I've now earned over $200,000 in just over 9 months! I signed with Trident Media; I was also contacted by the senior editor at a "big 6" publishing company because of my success on Amazon; and Amazon hand-picked two of my titles for special promotions--ALL because of my KDP Select success.

In March 2012 one Canadian author boldly went where few have gone before--into the land of making real money with Amazon's KDP Select program.

This is her story...

My name is Cheryl Kaye Tardif and I am an international bestselling suspense author who earned over $42,000 dollars in March 2012 selling ebooks via Amazon's KDP Select program, captured the interest of a major literary agency, and went on to sign with an agent at Trident Media. And I'm about to tell you HOW I did all that.

I don't normally tell people how much money I make, but I believe writers need to know it IS possible to earn a real income from your books. Seriously, if I can do it, anyone can--if you have the right combination of criteria and techniques.

In this book, I'll share with you what I believe are four key elements you must have in place to see high sales. And I'll reveal the strategic techniques I used during my KDP Select promotions that resulted in earning over $42,000--with $32,000 of that from ONE title alone.

Not only did I earn over $42,000 in ebook sales, I was contacted by Trident Media, one of the leading literary agencies in New York. The chairman, Robert Gottlieb, saw my success when my one title made #4 in the Top 100 Bestselling Kindle ebooks, right under The Hunger Games trilogy. I am now represented by agent Adrienne Lombardo.

So, if you're ready to earn some real money with Select, let's begin...

Free Book - Beyond Belief (K)

Beyond Belief - The Real Life of Daniel Defoe (Main/UK), by John Martin, is free in the Kindle store, courtesy of UK publisher Accent Press.
Book Description
John Martin is an Anglo-Irish writer who has investigated the mysterious and secret life of Daniel Defoe, the father of the English novel, whose books "Robinson Crusoe", "Moll Flanders", and "Roxana" have sold in vast numbers throughout the world for nearly three hundred years.

He reveals for the first time the real life of a highly talented religious dissenter whose sometimes outwardly pious and holier than thou demeanour disguised another, different existence in the shadows.

His complex life as journalist, government spy and secret 'Governor General' of the press, was paralleled by great personal confusion. A gay man, he was 'married' many times, with children by several women; he was always in debt; thirteen times arrested; Pilloried; and twice bankrupted. This book demonstrates that his secret life was stranger than those of the pirates, courtesans, pimps and murderers who crowd his pages.

Free Book - Guns for Hire (K)

Guns for Hire: The Modern Adventure Thriller (Including interviews with Gerald Seymour, Steve Berry, Alan Furst, Stephen Leather, Andy McNab and Chris Ryan) (Main/UK), by Barry Forshaw, is free in the Kindle store, courtesy of UK publisher Endeavour Press.
Book Description
Traditional masters of the high-energy adventure thriller such as John Buchan and Ian Fleming have been widely recognised as among the most talented and influential writers of the last century.

But in this ground-breaking critical study, the leading crime and film expert Barry Forshaw argues they are merely the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens or modern adventure thriller writers who are their equal - and while they may be hugely popular with the public they are ignored by literary editors.

In Guns for Hire: The Modern Adventure Thriller, Forshaw has written an unmissable guide to the writers who are underappreciated, and sometimes looked down upon -- but who need to be brought readers’ attention again.

And he looks at the best-selling thriller writers who have not enjoyed any serious critical attention.

In Guns For Hire, he provides an exuberant examination of a massively popular genre and a guide to the best thriller writing on the market today.

The book includes interviews with the leading writers in the genre such as Gerald Seymour, Steve Berry, Alan Furst, Stephen Leather, Andy McNab, and Chris Ryan.

It is a book no thriller fan can afford to be without.

About the author
Barry Forshaw’s latest book is Death in a Cold Climate: A Guide to Scandinavian Crime Fiction; his other work includes British Crime Writing: An Encyclopedia and The Rough Guide to Crime Fiction, along with books on Italian cinema, Film Noir and the first biography of Stieg Larsson. His next books are British Crime Film and a study of Thomas Harris and The Silence of the Lambs. He has written for various national newspapers, edits Crime Time, and is a talking head for ITV and BBC TV documentaries. He has been Vice Chair of the Crime Writers’ Association.

Free Book - The Crime Interviews Volume Three (K)

The Crime Interviews Volume Three: Bloody Scotland Edition (Main/UK), by Len Wanner, is free in the Kindle store, courtesy of small Scottish publisher Blasted Heath.
Book Description
If you’re interested in learning about how to write, how to be a writer, or about the writing life in general, what greater resource and pleasure than frank, revealing interviews with some of today's best-selling authors?

Len Wanner's acclaimed interview series continues with VOLUME THREE: THE BLOODY SCOTLAND EDITION, featuring in-depth interviews with twelve of the leading lights of Scottish crime fiction and with a foreword by William McIlvanney, creator of Jack Laidlaw and the Godfather of tartan noir.

The interviews:
  • Peter May talks about writing for television, repairing bad dialogue, researching his China thrillers with the help of the Ministry of Propaganda, and receiving international exposure with a book no British publisher wanted to publish, THE BLACKHOUSE.
  • Charles Cumming talks about the rewards of a degree in literature, refining expositional storytelling, researching state secrets at home and abroad, writing the great international spy novel, and being recruited by the SIS.
  • Campbell Armstrong talks about going abroad to write about home, giving up on teaching creative writing, getting over the paralysis of a bad sentence, going on stake-outs, giving us his memoirs, and getting commissioned to novelise Indiana Jones.
  • Caro Ramsay talks about teaching herself how to write with her back against the wall, learning how to write crime fiction from agents and editors, teaching herself how to compartmentalise, and learning how to finish a book.
  • Aline Templeton talks about diving in and out of writing, writing a series of cosy police procedurals based on a subterranean cave system, living in the city yet writing about the countryside, and discovering that a fictional protagonist is a living person.
  • Lin Anderson talks about the transferrable skills of teaching mathematics and calculating a career in creative writing, the constants of writing about a female serial protagonist, the variables of forensic science, and the lessons of fictional and factual near-death situations.
  • Alex Gray talks about the rewards of writing about a policeman twenty years younger than her, returning to education, researching as she writes, writing about what she doesn't know, and writing rather than retiring.
  • Gillian Galbraith talks about learning to nurture her talent for the uncollaborative nature of writing, letting go of her legal career to write about the limits of institutional justice, and leaving her comfort zone as a way of finding her voice and writing about her home.
  • GJ Moffat talks about what remains of his initial impulses and his international influences, the rules broken in most legal thrillers, and the rewards of letting his lawyer-cum-judge-cum-executioner break the rules of his day job.
  • Craig Robertson talks about the joys of fiction in and after journalism, the pleasure of writing for himself, the pressure of writing for others, the need for brutality in editing, and the greed for brutality in writing.
  • Ken McClure talks about the science of storytelling, the survival rate of a series of medical thrillers, the appeal of being his own agent, his second coming as an e-book bestseller, and his involvement in the identification of Gulf War Syndrome.
  • And Frederic Lindsay talks about the best ways to propel and pause plots, invent manner along with matter, make the familiar strange with the weight of experience, and exhaust potential to energise narrative.
"Wanner gets these writers to talk in a practical and down-to-earth manner about the nuts and bolts of writing – the importance of character, story, and plot; the advantages and disadvantages of writing a series; the various ways of getting from outline to finished manuscript" – from the afterword by David Schmid

About the author:
Len Wanner is the author of three volumes of THE CRIME INTERVIEWS series. He freelances as an interviewer, reviewer, and editor of the literary journal, TheCrimeOfItAll.com.
